Obituary of Kay Mooney

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Kay Mooney, who passed quietly on Wednesday November 20, 2024. Kay was a loving and devoted mother to her seven children: Heather of Russell, ON (the late Bryce Renwick), Gerald of Augusta, GA , Barry (Diane) of Vankleek Hill,ON, Karen (Marty Albright) of Vankleek Hill, ON, Arlene (Doug Spence) of Edmonton, AB, Kim (John Russell) of Vankleek Hill, ON, and Ian (the late Linda) of Vankleek Hill ON. She was the cherished grandmother of 15 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren, with one more on the way.

Kay was born and raised in Montreal, and spent many summers in St. Eugene on her grandfather’s Angus MacKinnon's farm. During that time, she met a young man named Eric Mooney, whom she would later marry on September 11, 1948. With that, Kay transitioned from a city girl to a farmer’s wife, settling with Eric on Maple Row in St. Eugene. Together, they raised their family and resided there until 1980, when they moved to Front Road in Hawkesbury to enjoy their retirement years.

Kay had a lifelong love for music, singing in the choir with her father and uncle at St. Mark’s United Church in Montreal. She shared her talent throughout her life, singing at countless weddings and funerals in the St. Eugene, Vankleek Hill, and Hawkesbury areas. Her passion for music continued at St. David's United Church, where she served as the organist for 47 years and led many choirs and Christmas musical events.

Her community involvement was extensive. Kay was an active member of the United Church Women (UCW), the Stardale Women’s Institute, and a dedicated 4H leader. A skilled judge of needlework, she participated in local country fairs and had a deep love for quilting, sewing, and all forms of needlework. Kay also volunteered at the Hawkesbury General Hospital for 20 years and assisted with the VON foot clinic for several years.

Donations in memory of Kay can be made to the Arthritis Society, The Hawkesbury General Hospital, or CHEO, would be appreciated by the family.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Heritage Lodge, where Kay enjoyed her retirement for 13 wonderful years, as well as to Carol Martin for her kindness, comfort, and compassion.

Kay will be dearly missed by her family, friends, and the many lives she touched. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.

A private family inurnment will be held.

A Tree of Remembrance will be planted in memory of Kay at the McAlpine Forever Forest, Vankleek Hill.
