I know Val from childhood and high school days. We hung out a lot, went to church together and just had fun. Actually her grandmother (who lived with Val's family) taught us how to "properly" brush my teeth and gums - be sure to wash those gums she'd say ... Val and I used to laugh at that all the time! She was with me the night my mother died and we just sat and held hands... comforting and no words needed. We drifted apart after high school and reconnected a couple of years back while she was in Toronto for Girl Guides, her heart was still as big as ever and she still loved to read!! Our lives are certainly enriched for knowing Val and my deepest sympathy to her family and friends who will miss her dearly.

I had the pleasure of meeting Val when I was living in Kingston several years ago. She was working at a training event that I attended and she was in there like a dirty shirt - helping coordinate the day, sharing skills, welcoming Guiders with her beautiful smile. Our paths crossed again when I became an Administrative Community Leader, and we shared some training/forum weekends. More recently, she became my ACL Advisor and I just knew I was in good hands. In a strange way, I'm sorry thatI didn't have any burning issues to share with her as my Advisor, because I know she would have had all the answers.

Rest in peace, Val. You are surrounded by Guiding friends who went before you, and sadly missed by those you left behind.

I first met Val at Mid-City many years ago. It was a boring repetitious job. Luckily, we could talk while we worked. Val made it endurable by telling tales of family, friends and guiding. However, when break time arrived talking was done. Val would either be taking a power nap in her chair or reading a book. She was a special and caring person. As a city girl, I always thought of her as fearless. She could organize a camping trip complete with menu and activities, pitch a tent with expertise no matter the weather, cook over an open fire and after an exhausting day, she would joyfully sing by the campfire. Over the years, there have been chance encounters where she spoke lovingly of her family and especially of her grandchildren. She was so proud.

Val, you will be missed. It is so hard to lose a loved one. My sincere sympathy goes out to your family and friends. May your strength carry them through today and every tomorrow. Rest in peace my friend.

Val, May heaven greet you with a bottomless pot of tea, an endless supply of books and vast gardens that you can tend to while watching over your family. You have raised a strong and beautiful family that will miss you beyond words, yet they will make it through because all you have taught them. They will take the beautiful memories created over the years and replay them in their minds. Some will make them laugh and some will make them cry. Dawson Family, Hold on to those happy memories and laugh til you cry as Val often did. She always persevered and has taught you the means to do so as well. This is a difficult time, and you may feel that you cannot go on. Please continue to go on, it would make her so happy. If you remember back to the late 90’s when her car had no reverse. She continued on by finding different ways to get her car around. Sometimes it even included putting her foot out the door to push the car backwards. Take the time to remember, then put your foot out the door so that you can move forward. She was filled with love and pride for you all, and made it clear to everyone and anyone she knew.
