Obituary of Eunice Macaulay

Macaulay, Eunice "Euni" passed away peacefully at the Hawkesbury General Hospital on Monday, July 8th 2013 only three days after her 90th birthday. Eunice was a remarkable lady who was shy to talk about her lifetime of accomplishments. She was born in St. Helens, Lancashire in 1923 and, during the Second World War, served in the WRENS with the British Armed Forces as a radio technician. In the 1950's she became a graphic artist and greeting card designer and after emigrating first to the U.S. and then to Canada in the sixties, she embarked upon a highly successful career in film animation. She worked at the National Film Board of Canada for almost twenty years in the art department and as producer, winning the Academy Award for 'Best Animated Short Film' in 1978 for "Special Delivery". Eunice retired to Vankleek Hill in 1990 and enjoyed 23 active years in the community, volunteering as a reader at the Heritage Lodge as well as being a long serving member of the Stardale Branch of the Vankleek Hill Women's Institute and a member of the local and self-titled "Ancient Brits Club". Eunice will be dearly missed by the folk on 'the Hill', her friends in Montreal, by her extended family in England and by all the friends who contributed to Eunis' happiness and well-being, enjoyed her positive attitude, her intelligence and her very special sense of humour. Heartfelt thanks to all those friends who played a part in her life, from her daughters Lesley and Maggi; her granddaughters Zoë and Emilie; her husband Jim; David, Susan and Graeme, and the rest of her English family; the lads, Chris and Stephane and Scooter. A Private Family Gathering will be held at a later date. To express your condolences, make a donation, send flowers or light a memory candle please visit www.hillcrestfuneralhome.ca.
