One of my family's greatest memories of Auntie Phyl was when Christopher, Matthew, Glenda and I visited her and Uncle Willard at their "Cabin" for a week in August 2001. We had an extremely difficult time just getting out of Atlanta, Georgia to begin the vacation, but those terrible memories quickly faded when we arrived at Van Kleek Hill at the home of Auntie Phyl and Uncle Willard for the trip to the "Cabin". We completed the trip to the "Cabin" in a very short time.
I would classify this vacation as one of the most memorable that we have ever had as a family. This visit with my family to "The Cabin" is forever etched in my mind. It allowed us to spend an enormous amount of quality time together as a family and with Auntie Phyl and Uncle Willard. It was so relaxing and enjoyable because Auntie Phyl and Uncle Willard were excellent hosts. They allowed us to just relax and enjoy ourselves and to enjoy each other's company. Also, the quality time we got to spent together with Auntie Phyl and Uncle Willard were awesome. We spent many an enjoyable hour just sitting around the table socializing or sitting in the lawn chairs with a Caesar or other beverage overlooking the water and reminiscing about the many great memories we had over the past decades. We refreshed many memories when, as a young boy, I stayed with my twin brother Bill during the summers at Grandpa and Grandma Kees' in Aubrey, Quebec. For many of these years, Auntie Phyl was still living with them and working in Montreal. Auntie Phyl always treated Bill and I as her own. Also, Auntie Phyl showed Glenda how to make a Seven Layered Dip, aka Charlie's Dip, with salsa that was absolutely stunning. Glenda still makes the Seven Layered Dip to this day. The wonderful memories of our vacation at the "Cabin" comeback when Glenda makes the dip.
Auntie Phyl and Uncle Willard took us on a motorboat tour of the two lakes near their "Cabin". The two lakes with the small connecting passage running in front of their "Cabin" has some of the most beautiful scenery around. We really enjoyed the tour and Uncle Willard's narrative of interesting places on the lakes. Also, the boys and I got to go canoeing several times after the tour going back to several places of interest that Auntie Phyl and Uncle Willard showed us.
Especially memorable to the boys were two events that occurred during our vacation at the "Cabin". Christopher was swimming in front of the "Cabin" and got caught in an undertow or strong current that was carrying him out to one of the two big lakes. Auntie Phyl realized that Christopher was in trouble and jumped and swam to him and assisted him back to the dock. He feels to this day that Auntie Phyl saved his life because no one else was around when this happened. One of the most hilarious occurrences was while Matthew was canoeing in front of the "Cabin" and two young French speaking girls came canoeing along. Matthew could not speak French and the girls could not speak English. However, the antics these youngsters demonstrated in trying to communicate with each other is what makes a good movie. The futility of trying to communicate finally won out and the girls went on their way. Meanwhile, Auntie Phyl, Uncle Willard, Glenda and I were almost splitting our sides laughing while watching this situation unfold.
Over a period of several years, Auntie Phyl was persistent trying to get us to come on vacation to the "Cabin" to visit her and Uncle Willard. I cannot thank her enough for her persistence. As stated above, this vacation was one of the most memorable and enjoyable we have ever had as a family. It was especially rewarding for me because I was able to spend a lot of quality time with Glenda and the boys. In addition, we were able to spend quality time with Auntie Phyl and Uncle Willard. I cannot find the words to thank you for everything that you did for me and my family.
Auntie Phyl will always be remembered as an "Angel" along with other Angels: your mother/my Grandmother Ada Kees, and your sister/my mother, Marvel Sommerfield. May God Bless and Keep You Auntie Phyl.
Your Loving Nephew,
George W. Sommerfield
She will be so greatly missed by our family. Mr. Orr and family, hoping that fond memories comfort you during the difficult time and always. Hugs and love.
All through my mom's long illness my dad has been a rock.
When people go through a long illness as my mom did people tend to focus on them
which is how it should be, but they tend to forget the toll such an illness can have on the spouse.
The fact that my dad took care of and stood by his wife through it all is a testament to the type of man
he is and the type of love he is capable of. One of the many lessons my parents have taught me.
Thanks' dad I love you and am proud to be you daughter.

So many great memories..... One summer (before either of us were married), Phyllis used to work for Ask Mr Foster travel in Montreal. I was able to accompany her on a "paid" holiday at two ranches in the Adirondacks. We had such a good time, trying to ride the horses etc. even though we were not experienced. Love you "girl" (Rose)
