Lisa purchased flowers (Precious Heart Bouquet)
To the most wonderful wife anyone could ask for.
With deepest sympathy at this sad time. We will always have wonderful memories of Matte's Drug Store where Roger & Mary always greeted everyone with smiles and kindness. Sincerely, The Kerr Family
Our depest sympathy. I will remember Roger's friendly smile and wave as he slowly toured Vankleek Hill and the area. Rest in Peace, Roger.
Fond memories of happy times together visiting Mary & Roger at the store, and of the good talks we had on various occasions. Rest in Peace, Roger. In loving memory, Louise
I will always have fond memories of Roger. I have known Roger all of my life as he and Mary were good friends of my parents, Doug and Shirley. It is ironic to me that he should pass on Christmas day. For as many years as I can remember Roger and Mary would visit my parents on Christmas Eve. It wasnt's until I was a teenager did I discover that Roger was Santa Claus to my brother and I. It was Roger who signed my letters to Santa and ate my Christmas cookies, assisting with the filling of stockings and putting out those special presents.
Just like everyone else in VKH remembers, Roger and Mattes Store went hand in hand. Like the words to the song I wrote Small Town Charm, " You'd always see Roger standing in the door, while the kids read the comics from the low shelf in his store".
May You Rest In Peace Roger.

Gabriel, Luc and I discovered Matte's store in 1980 when we came to live in Vankleek Hill. Amongst all the notions, Roger sold comic books. The boys loved to visit the comic racks and make their selections. Once Roger knew which titles they were collecting, he put them behind the counter each week, knowing the boys would arrive with their change in-hand. It seemed to me that no matter when I visited the shop, Mary was in the kitchen with the ironing board out. It was a well maintained store where you could buy a gift, a new battery for your watch - or just chat with Roger and Mary who always enjoyed a good story. I will also miss waving to Roger each day because after he retired, he took up cruising through town to assess what was new, and who was who. I found it reassuring.
I will always remember visiting the store and being greeted by Roger and Mary with a friendly hello and the question "What's new?" It was always interesting looking through the shelves and checking out the stock. The best time was following Christmas when all the Christmas paper, cards etc. were on sale. He carried the finest christmas wrapping and ribbon . You never saw the Christmas bags we have today.
When our boys were young he always had suggestions from items on his shelves to cure whatever their ailment was at the time. And yes, it usually worked.
it was an always an adventure when visitng Matte's store.
