Obituary of Barry Mackay
Peacefully at the Ottawa General Hospital, on Friday, October 13, 2023, Barry Mackay of Ottawa formerly of Montreal passed away at the age of 74. He had been battling a debilitating lung disease for the past year. He was predeceased by his father, Stephen Mackay, mother Dorothy Mackay (nee Watson), and stepmother Anne Dainty Mackay.Dear stepbrother to Paul Dainty (Angela), cherished uncle to Kareena Dainty-Edward (Fraser), Julie Dainty Johansson (Petter), Christopher Dainty (Jennifer) and a much-loved great uncle to Grace, Annabelle, Elsa, Elijah, Erik, Kara, Trevor.
Barry was a long-time employee of Abbott Laboratories in Montreal, where he lived all his life, just recently relocating to Ottawa this past summer. He had a love and great knowledge of musical theatre and took many trips to NYC to see Broadway shows. He was known at work as “Abbott’s man on Broadway”. He was a long-time supporter of The Centaur Theatre in Montreal. He had a love of travel. He experienced many train tours throughout Europe and enjoyed cruises with family and friends.
Barry had a gentle, thoughtful, and generous spirit and will be deeply missed by our whole family, including the dogs, who loved the treats and toys he always brought for them. He always mailed boxes of candy and chocolates to the children for Halloween and Easter, and never missed a birthday.
Per his wishes, a Celebration of Barry's life will take place next summer, along with interment of his ashes, when his family can be together. Barry was an avid supporter of over 50 charities, so if you wish, a donation can be made to a charity of your choice in his memory.
